We’ve all been there. An unruly mustache. A wild hair or two (and the rest).
It can be tough to keep everything looking neat and tidy. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Check out our helpful tips on how to keep your mustache looking sharp and laying down flat.
What You Will Need to Keep a Mustache Down
There’s not much you really need here other than a comb and a bit of patience. You might also find it helpful to have some mustache wax on hand.
If you don’t have any, no worries – you can make do with some hair gel or pomade (however I’d avoid using this over the long run as it can dry out your ‘stache).
Step 0: Wash Your Mustache
A clean mustache is a happy mustache. Start off by giving your mustache a good wash. shampoo and conditioner (ideally proper beard ones to prevent your mustache from becoming dry and brittle). Just make sure you rinse thoroughly and as you dry it out you can try to shape it by flattening it down.
Step 1: Comb It Out
Start by combing out your mustache using a fine-toothed comb (make sure you let it dry before you do this, as when it is warm and soft, this is also when your mustache is weakest, so you want to avoid pulling out any hairs).
If you have particularly unruly ‘stache hair, you might want to start with a wide-toothed comb to get the knots out first and then go in with the finer option (this is why you will find most good mustache combs have both ends in one comb).
Step 2: Apply Your Favourite Mustache Wax
If you’re using mustache wax, now’s the time to apply it. Get a pea-sized amount on your fingertips and then rub it into your mustache. Be sure to work it in evenly from root to tip. If you find it’s not enough, you can always add a bit more
Once you’ve got good coverage of wax, use your comb to help distribute it evenly, and then shape your mustache how you want it. You can go for a classic handlebar look or keep it simple with a straight mustache.
At this stage, it might be worth gauging the strength of the wax you’re using. If you find it’s too soft and your mustache is drooping within minutes, you might want to try a different brand or look for a formula that is specifically designed for mustaches.
If you have a particularly unruly mustache that you can’t keep down, look for stache waxes that contain petroleum – although it is less natural, it will give you a stronger hold.
Step 3: Style Away
Now you’ve got your mustache styled the way you want it, it’s time to set it in place. You can do this by blast drying it on a cool setting or if you’re patient, just let it air dry If you want to get creative, there are all sorts of other ways you can style your mustache.
Some guys swear by applying hair spray after this, however, I am not a fan as I find it can make your mustache feel crunchy. If you do want to give it a try, just use a light hand and avoid getting any in your mouth (nobody likes the taste of hairspray)
Another popular option is using a tiny bit of beard oil. This will help to keep your mustache healthy and soft as well as tame any flyaway hairs. Simply apply a few drops to your mustache and comb it through.
So there you have it, everything you need to know about how to keep your mustache down. Just remember, the key is to be patient and take your time. And if all else fails, just reach for
Step 4: Maintain It
Once you’ve got your mustache looking sharp, you’ll want to keep it that way. comb it every day and reapply wax as needed (usually every couple of days). If you find your mustache is starting to look a bit dry or crispy, you can give it a light misting of water to rehydrate it
And that’s it! Just follow these simple steps and you’ll have a mustache that would make even the most impressive handlebar mustaches jealous.
What To Do About Mustache Flyaways?
You can always give them the snip. If you have a mustache that is particularly unruly, you may find that trimming the odd flyaway hair will help keep your mustache looking neat and tidy. Just be careful not to go too crazy as you don’t want to end up with an uneven mustache.
What tends to happen is you get a bit ‘scissor happy and before you know it, half your mustache is gone. If this happens, just take a deep breath, step away from the mirror and wait for it to grow back. It will, I promise.
And that’s it! Just follow these simple steps and you’ll have a mustache that would make even the most impressive handlebar mustaches.
