What we think of the Wahl Groomsman 9916-1117

It has been mentioned a few times, but having this quality of trimmer at its price point is pretty impressive to say the least, factoring in the great battery life and the various trimmer heads and adjustments which all do a great job and I can see this trimmer lasting for several years.

Full Review

Upon unpacking this trimmer, you’ll come across its arsenal of accessories. All of which are useful. Or that have a use, whether you use them all is down to preference. The adjustment comb, trimming heads, comb, oil, cleaning brush and trimmer all fit into the base station. While a good idea, it could have been executed better in my opinion. It is alright for occasional use and could do with bottoms for all the slots as when moving it, things can drop out but this is a very situational issue.

Honestly, when I was testing this out for a month, like I can imagine most people will also do. I would leave the stand in one of them “safe places” with all the bits in, and have the trimmer lying around on a table somewhere with the adjustable comb on it.

The big turn on:

I’m going to start off with some straight up truths, this trimmer is a little louder than I had expected, not deafening, just a touch above average but you aren’t going to leave it running.

On the power switch down the left hand side of the trimmer, there is a little red button on top of a switch which it will not slide up to power on, unless this button is depressed. Personally, I think this is a neat feature and shows some attention to detail here. After all, the last thing you want when taking your trimmer on holiday is to find it’s been bumped on in baggage and you’ve just lost your power for the trip.

Battery:

These trimmers seem to be shipped with some charge initially which is a nice touch. You can get right in to trimming from the moment you break it out the packaging.

I have to say, the batter does last a long time which is great in any product, especially trimmers. The Wahl Groomsman has an advertised run time of 60 minutes of a full charge. While we didn't get this level of battery performance from the Groomsman in testing, we did get a respectable 40-45 minutes of continuous run time.

That being said, even after it had seemingly drained its battery, after turning off for a few minutes and subsequently turning it back on, you got another half minute of power so I would expect during normal use, over several weeks, I could easily see this getting within touching distance of the 60-minute claim.

Just a note, the light that is on the trimmer didn't indicate to me when I’ve been using it that it is getting low on battery, which is a slight shame, though as mentioned, the battery will last a long time and let’s be honest, sticking it on to charge overnight and then stick the charger back in the draw for a couple more months is pretty good going for any beard trimmer.

Build quality.

One of the great features of this trimmer and one that is really pleasing to find, especially at its price point is the build quality. The Wahl 9916-1117 Groomsman feels very sturdy in hand, with a reasonable weight to it. It isn't just the trimmer itself, the attachment heads also feel really solid. This includes the adjustable guide comb which can be prone to flex, slip or be ineffective in use on some beard trimmers, it is surprisingly strong and can stand up to some serious punishment.

General maintenance:

This part of the trimmer gets a mention because, it isn’t waterproof. You cannot and should not rinse it, though it does come with a little brush should you need to clean out some hair trimmings. This isn’t really much of an issue though as I tend to not wash my trimmers all that frequently anyway. One thing to mention is that you should regularly oil the beard trimmer blades once a month according to the instruction manual. Wahl do however, include a little bottle in the pack and it is probably enough to reasonably last you the life time of the trimmer from what I would estimate.

When looking to do this though, it says add 1 or 2 drops where indicated on the illustration. The thing is, from what I could see, there isn’t an illustration.

This would likely leave you wondering “how do I oil my beard trimmer?”. For this reason, I’ve knocked up a little diagram of suggested areas to lubricate. You want to put a small drop at both the base and the trimmer blades and at the head(see below).

It would be worth doing this at both sides of the trimmer, let it trickle through a little and run towards the cutting edges and turn it on to coat the blades.

One of the benefits of this though, if well maintained, this trimmer should last for many years, and Wahl themselves provide a 3-year warranty on this Groomsman model which is particularly noteworthy at this price point.

Trimming performance:

After all, a trimmer is only as good as it’s trim and the Wahl Groomsman does a good job of that, with the ergonomically design, it feels comfortable in hand and with the strong design of the trimming heads, it does a good all round job and the precision ground blades this model utilises do finish the job with minimal snagging.

The adjustable guide comb also provides a reasonable 6 trimming lengths ranging from 1.5mm up to 13mm which should provide ample flexibility for a good trim and at this price point it is going to be very hard to beat.

Final Verdict:

It has been mentioned a few times, but having this quality of trimmer at its price point is pretty impressive to say the least, factoring in the great battery life and the various trimmer heads and adjustments which all do a great job and I can see this trimmer lasting for several years.
