Overall, the Philips Series 3000 Grooming Kit provides great performance and incredible versatility. The low maintenance and fully waterproof design can be really useful. While the hair clipper comb could be of a sturdier design, we wouldn’t buy this as an all our hair clipper. As a beard trimmer, it does great job and with the added bonus of a really well built nose and ear trimmer attachment, this grooming kit is a one-man band that’ll perform at a high level for a remarkably long time.

Philips QG3342/32 Series 3000 Grooming Kit Review

The first thing you’ll notice when getting this trimmer, is the array of tools at your disposal. They don’t call this the multi-groom for nothing, you’ve got tools for stubble, beard and precision trimming along with hair clipper and even ear and nose hair attachments.

Philips have also included with the Series 3000 multigroom, in the QG3342/32 package, an 18+ cm long comb which is a welcome addition. The great thing about this comb is that it is well build, not any old rubbish they’ve thrown in there, they have put more thought into it than that and it feels very sturdy.

One half of the comb is wide toothed, and the other 9cm or so has much narrower teeth. This is great as while it is common belief that you should use a wide tooth comb when grooming your beard to avoid pulling any hairs out though I do prefer a narrow option for my moustache. Maybe that’s just me, but they’ve given you the option.

A slight disappointment I felt with this kit though is the storage box, I know it’s not really designed to be heavily utilised but it is pretty flimsy to say the least, you’re better off finding a draw to keep all your bits in.

The big turn on:

Turning on this trimmer, you’ll notice that it’s actually reasonably quite in operation. Pretty good news, especially if you’re to jam it down your ear hole to clean out some of them pesky hairs.

Just to mention, there is not a power light built into this trimmer, while not much of an issue when in use as it does have a pretty good battery, more on that later, but this lack of LED does make you think twice when plugging it in to charge. Just remember to remain conscious of when you last charged it up, two face is a hard look to pull off if you get caught off guard.

Battery performance:

This section was a bit of a curve ball, something I completely didn’t expect. When testing it, I typically charge the trimmer overnight, make sure it’s completely full, I left it through the next day as well to be especially sure due to the lack of LED as mentioned.

Then I fire it up and time how long it takes to run down completely.

This should get a reliable figure, while not totally accurate in terms of actual usage, but I wouldn’t have any beard left if I trimmed for hours at a time, beside, actual trimming would have way more variation. With this method we will get a consistent test across all trimmers we test and we can use that to pit them against one another.

The Philips QG3342/32 performed remarkably well with our battery test, running it down several times in the same way as described above, it was getting times in excess of 1 hour and 15 minutes of continuous running. The longest of which was a whopping 1 hour and 27 minutes.

What makes this even more surprising, on the box of the Series 3000 grooming kit, it advertises a battery life of 35 minutes after a 10-hour charge, while we did charge for closer to a 16-17-hour period, this is outstanding.

Actual usage will most likely vary when under load.

Build Quality:

The design of the Philips QG3342/32 Series 3000 does feel a good shape in the hand, and it has a decent weight to it, though I would prefer it to have a slightly less plastic feel, it does the job and feels strong.

That’s more than can be said for the hair clipping comb, this does have quite a bit of flex in the prongs which, while shouldn’t be much of an issue unless you’re really driving this thing into your scalp, just worth noting.

That being said, the stubble and beard attachments do seem to hold up better and whilst not as sturdy as the Wahl Groomsman’s attachments, these will do the job just fine.

One noteworthy design feature about the adjustable beard comb attachment is the presence of a second set of teeth coming up the rear of the comb which should stop any uneven trimming that could occur by hairs poking round the back of the guide.

On top of that, the inclusion of the nose and ear hair trimmer is a major selling feature if you’re in the market for such a device and it’s one of the reasons we included this in our line up at Beard Trimmer Bay.

It’s nothing short of awesome. I even got my father to test this out and it handled even his most stubborn of hairs. The stand out design feature is the cylindrical design, having gaps that let the hairs poke through with a set of cutting edges whirring round inside. He loved it, and I’m sure many more. He explicitly compared it to his current nose and ear hair trimmer, that used the fairly common angled trimmer blade design, saying that he often nicked the inside of the nose which was just not going to happen with this cylindrical design.

On top of that, all this is waterproof. You can even use it in the shower if you want, which really helps with the maintenance and cleaning of the grooming kit.

General maintenance:

As I’ve just mentioned, being completely waterproof, you can easily rinse the trimmer clean of all your hairs to keep it clean.

Also, there’s no need to oil this trimmer and this low maintenance design is a real winner.

Trimming performance:

The Philips Series 3000 multigroom does a great job of trimming beards as well, and the precision trimmer does a good job of pointing up your neck and cheek lines, keeping you looking sharp. While I can’t say for definite how much of a difference the “Rounded blade design” actually makes, I can say that I didn’t have any irritation when trimming these precision areas and didn’t feel at risk of any nicks.

When trimming with the beard and moustache comb, it seemed to slip through my beard with relative ease and trim the hairs very capably, and I was pleased with the end result, especially with this double comb design of the adjustable head.

When you are trimming and swapping out the combs and trimmer heads, the combs are incredibly easy to swap and adjust, just sliding on and off. The trimmer heads themselves, come off with a simple anti-clockwise wise and off they pop, though the mechanism for delivering the power to the head, let’s call it the drive shaft, doesn’t look the most robust design that it could be. I wouldn’t count that against the Philips Series 3000 but it does make you wonder how it will cope after a year or so of use.

Philips must be reasonably confident though, providing a reasonable 2 years of warranty as standard with the grooming kit.

Final verdict:

Overall, the Philips Series 3000 Grooming Kit provides great performance and incredible versatility. The low maintenance and fully waterproof design can be really useful. While the hair clipper comb could be of a sturdier design, we wouldn’t buy this as an all our hair clipper. As a beard trimmer, it does great job and with the added bonus of a really well built nose and ear trimmer attachment, this grooming kit is a one-man band that’ll perform at a high level for a remarkably long time.
